You said “I do” with your whole heart. You meant every word.
But somewhere between the wedding and right now — somewhere between the joy and the routine, the dreams and the demands — something shifted. Not in a dramatic, Hollywood way. More like a slow fade. Conversations got shorter. Prayers together stopped. You started existing side by side instead of walking hand in hand.
If that resonates, you are not alone. And more importantly, you haven’t failed — you’ve just drifted from the foundation.
The Problem No One Warned You About
Here’s the hard truth: most Christian couples get married with a genuine desire to honour God, but nobody tells them how to keep God at the centre when life gets loud.
We are surrounded by a culture that treats marriage as a contract — a deal between two people that holds as long as it feels good and works for both parties. When comfort fades or conflict rises, the cultural answer is simply to renegotiate or walk away.
But Scripture tells a radically different story.
In Genesis 2:24, God established something far deeper than a contract: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” That word — hold fast — is the language of covenant. It means to cling, to cleave, to refuse to let go.
And in Ephesians 5:31-32, the Apostle Paul reveals the staggering mystery behind it all: marriage is a living picture of the relationship between Christ and His Church. Your marriage is a parable. A testimony. A window the watching world peers through to see what sacrificial, unwavering love actually looks like.
No wonder the enemy works so hard to destroy it.
When we treat our marriages as personal arrangements built around our own happiness, we miss the whole point — and we leave ourselves without the spiritual fuel to sustain them.
The Solution: Return to the Covenant
A covenant is not a feeling. It is a commitment grounded in something bigger than emotion — rooted in God’s character, upheld by His grace, and nourished by intentional, daily practice.
The good news? Returning to covenant love is not complicated. It is consistent.
The couples who experience the deepest, most enduring connection are not those who never have conflict. They are the ones who keep choosing each other — and keep choosing God — one day at a time.
Here are three practices to start with:
1. Pray together — out loud, daily. Matthew 18:19 promises that when two agree in prayer, God is present. There is something profoundly unifying about kneeling before God together. Couples who pray together build a shared spiritual language that holds through every season.
2. Speak words that build, not words that wound. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that a gentle answer turns away wrath. Your words have power in your marriage. Make it a daily discipline to speak something affirming, specific, and sincere to your spouse — even on the hard days, especially on the hard days.
3. Forgive quickly and forgive completely. Colossians 3:13 calls us to bear with one another and forgive as the Lord forgave us. Unforgiveness is a slow poison that seeps through everything. Choosing forgiveness is not weakness — it is covenant fidelity in action.
