The Question Is — By Whom?
Before your child eats breakfast, they’ve likely already been exposed to more content, opinions, and cultural pressure than you encountered in an entire week growing up. Algorithms are fine-tuned to capture their attention. AI is generating personalised content at a scale no parent can keep up with. And the culture surrounding them — in school, on screens, through earbuds — is not neutral.
It is discipling them.
This is the reality of Christian parenting in 2026. And the families that will raise children of lasting faith are the ones willing to face it honestly — and respond with more than wishful thinking.
The Three Forces Working Against Your Family Right Now
The Apostle John wrote to a church surrounded by competing cultural values, and his words in 1 John 2:15-17 cut just as sharply today:
“Do not love the world or anything in the world… For everything in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — comes not from the Father but from the world.”
John named three forces. They haven’t changed. But in 2026, they’ve been turbocharged.
1. The Lust of the Eyes — Now Algorithmically Powered Social media platforms are no longer passive feeds. They are precision-engineered environments designed to provoke desire, comparison, and craving. Your child’s phone is not just entertainment — it is a pipeline delivering a worldview, one swipe at a time. Covetousness looks like a highlight reel. Materialism is marketed as a lifestyle. The “lust of the eyes” that John warned about now has a 24/7 delivery system.
2. The Pride of Life — Now Culturally Celebrated The culture of 2026 has elevated self above everything. Self-expression, self-definition, and self-promotion are the values being poured into your child through every influencer, ad campaign, and school curriculum. Humility — the very character quality that Scripture says unlocks God’s grace (Proverbs 16:18) — is treated as weakness. Raising a child who bows before God in an age that worships the self is one of the most countercultural acts a parent can take.
3. The Lust of the Flesh — Now Normalised Instant gratification is no longer a temptation; it is an expectation. Same-day delivery, on-demand entertainment, and an internet with no content guardrails have redefined what “normal” looks like for children. The patient, self-controlled life of a disciple is not something children absorb passively — it must be actively cultivated.

The Solution Is Ancient — and More Urgent Than Ever
The good news is that none of this is new territory for God. The call to guard our hearts, renew our minds, and fix our eyes on eternity has always been the way forward.
Renew the Mind Intentionally (Romans 12:2) Don’t expect faith to win by default. It requires deliberate effort — family devotions, open conversations about what your children are watching and hearing, and your own example of seeking God’s Word daily. Store Up Heavenly Treasures (Matthew 6:19-21) Intentionally redirect your family’s investment of time, money, and energy toward things with eternal weight — serving others, generosity, mission, and worship. Counter the culture of accumulation with the practice of giving.
