Every boy is on a journey.
As he grows, he is learning from the people around him, the experiences he has, the choices he makes and the values he sees modelled.
The question is not whether boys are being shaped.
The question is:
What are they being shaped into?
That is the heart behind Becoming Theo.
More Than Just a Story
Becoming Theo is an invitation to think about what it means for a boy to grow into the man he is called to become.
It explores the importance of the foundations that help shape a young person’s life โ including faith, character, confidence, purpose and the influence of positive role models.
For parents, it can provide an opportunity to start meaningful conversations.
For churches and leaders, it can encourage discussion about how we support the next generation.
And for those who work with boys, it highlights the importance of creating environments where young people can learn, belong and grow.
Faith
Faith is not simply something we talk about on Sundays.
It can become part of the way children understand themselves, their relationships, their choices and the world around them.
Helping boys develop a foundation of faith gives them something to build on as they face new experiences and challenges throughout life.
Character
Character is developed over time.
Through everyday decisions, challenges, responsibilities and relationships, boys learn what integrity, courage, respect and responsibility look like.
The people around them have an important role to play in modelling these qualities and encouraging them when things are difficult.
Confidence
Confidence is not about believing you can do everything.
Healthy confidence grows when boys are given opportunities to try, fail, learn, try again and discover what they are capable of.
They need encouragement.
They need people who believe in them.
And they need environments where they can develop skills and confidence alongside others.
Purpose
As boys grow, they begin to ask bigger questions about who they are and where they fit.
Helping them understand that their lives have purpose can shape the way they see themselves and the way they approach the future.
Faith, character and confidence all contribute to that journey.
The Importance of Role Models
One of the strongest messages behind Becoming Theo is the importance of the people who speak into a boy’s life.
Parents matter.
Fathers matter.
Grandparents matter.
Church leaders matter.
Mentors matter.
Youth leaders matter.
Positive male role models matter.
Boys need to see examples of the kind of men they can become.
They need people who will encourage them, challenge them, listen to them and point them towards truth.
Building Something That Lasts
The experiences boys have during childhood can stay with them for life.
A conversation.
A mentor.
A place where they belonged.
A challenge they overcame.
A person who believed in them.
A lesson about faith.
These moments can become part of the story they carry into adulthood.
That is why investing in boys today matters.
We are not simply raising children.
We are helping shape the next generation.
A Partnership for the Next Generation
Becoming Theo is being shared as part of the partnership between Faith Parent and Boysโ Brigade Queensland.
Both organisations recognise the importance of supporting children and families and creating opportunities for boys to grow in faith, character, confidence and purpose.
We hope this eBook encourages parents, churches and leaders to think intentionally about the influences surrounding the boys in their lives.
Most importantly, we hope it starts conversations.
What Kind of Man Will Your Boy Become?
We may not be able to predict every step of a child’s future.
But we can help create the foundations they build upon.
We can encourage them.
We can model faith and character.
We can surround them with positive influences.
We can give them opportunities to grow.
And we can remind them that they are known, valued and capable of becoming the person God created them to be.
