What Is My God-Given Purpose? (It’s Closer Than You Think)

Have you ever laid in bed at night and thought, “What is my life actually for?”

I mean, we’re doing all the right things. School runs. Work. Dinner. Repeat. And somewhere in the middle of it we wonder — is this as good as it gets?

This can be a really challenging place to be in. But friend, the Bible’s answer might surprise you

You and I Were Made on Purpose, for a Purpose

One of my favourite verses I keep coming back to is Ephesians 2:10: “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand for us to walk in.”

Workmanship. You know some Bible translations say masterpiece.

In other words, God made you and I on purpose, for a purpose — despite any of our own accolades or shortcomings. Psalm 139 says He knit us together, and every one of our days was written in His book before a single one happened.

Your life is not random. It never was.

Purpose Isn’t Performance

Did you know your God-given purpose isn’t actually about performance? It isn’t something we need to strive for.

At times we treat purpose like something we have to earn. I’ve been there too.

But I have learned that purpose doesn’t start with what we do. It starts with who we are — and whose we are. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

I know it can be really hard in certain seasons to remember or even feel this to be true. But can I tell you — identity is the anchor.

And notice the wording in Ephesians? Those good works were prepared beforehand for us to walk in. Not to strive for. Not to chase down. Perhaps you need to slow down. No need to run — the good works are already under your feet.

Purpose Can Look Like an Ordinary Tuesday

Purpose doesn’t have to look like a stage or a spotlight… and it usually doesn’t.

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

Whatever we do. Packing lunchboxes. Showing up to work with integrity. Praying with our kids at bedtime.

We keep thinking purpose is waiting on the other side of our circumstances — when the kids are older, when things settle down. No. Not at all. Purpose isn’t waiting beyond your season. It’s woven into it.

How About This Week We Take a Step?

1. Anchor your identity first. Before the day makes its demands, remind yourself: I am God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus.

2. Do one ordinary thing as unto the Lord. Choose one task you’d usually rush, and do it deliberately for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)

3. Pray one simple prayer. “Lord, show me the good works You’ve prepared for me today.” Then watch. They’re usually nearer than we expect.

Quick FAQ

What does the Bible say my purpose is? To know God, glorify Him, and walk in the good works He prepared for you (Ephesians 2:10). Your specific expression flows from how He’s uniquely made you.

Can I have purpose in an ordinary season? Yes. Colossians 3:23 makes no distinction between sacred and ordinary work. Everyday faithfulness matters deeply to God.
